In Japan today, some use the term "pet-loss syndrome" to refer to the condition of the owners who are bereaved from death of their pets. However, it is controversial whether this term should be propelled to common usage. Investigation about issues of concern regarding this term is necessary to discuss the pros and cons of this expression. To collect as wide of a variety of ideas about the expression as possible, a total of 99 medical, veterinary and humanities students from three different universities were recruited for an open-ended questionnaire. By content analysis, 142 minimum units for analyzing were extracted from 13,475 characters written on the questionnaire. These units were organized into 18 codes classified in four groups. In order to establish a theory of terming, the KJ method was finally conducted by treating the codes as basic data for abduction. The constructed theory showed a basic concept that [pros and cons of terming "pet-loss syndrome"] were assessed by two factors: [validity of the disease name] and [influence from the disease name]. Furthermore, it was also assumed that [perception toward grief derived from pet loss] differed from person to person, which could affect these factors.
