Abstract: This monograph focuses on Kaixiangong village, which is located in Jiangsu Province, China. Because of a study by China's famous social anthropologist Fei Xiaotong, this village is well-known around the world. In China, during the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s, township-owned enterprises drew a significant amount of attention. Since then, along with the development of rural industry and institutional transfer, township-owned enterprises have gradually been replaced by private enterprises. In this study, chronological first-hand data collected in Kaixiangong village is used to trace the changes in employment and wage payment during the transformation from township-owned enterprises to private enterprises. The conclusion is that the employment absorption capacity has remained in the rural areas, and that villagers have continued to be employed at wage incomes that make up a high proportion of their household economics. However, private enterprises depend more on migrant workers and workers from peripheral villages, which means that the employment priority in the village is vanishing.
