Abstract: Research on career development in Japanese companies has been limited. This paper provides an overview of research related to careers. Research on career development in Japan is then reviewed. It was found that the concept of career development differs between Western and Japanese culture. The main implication is that Japanese companies may have to adjust their management practices to respond to changing employee career attitudes. (JEL N12)
