Abstract: This study focuses on the regionality of swine farms and discusses characteristics and business expansion of 9 swine farms located on rice paddy fields in Miyagi-Prefecture. The results show that the 9th swine farm is a family farm that has adopted the latest technology and has more than 300 breeding sows. In addition, a rapid business expansion is notable in swine farm C compared to the other farms. The factors appear to be the ensuring of a farm site that can be scaled up, the outsourcing of manure treatment, and increased revenue. According to the results, pig farms on rice paddy fields can be characterized as unable to have their scales expanded in plain areas or to move to forest areas due to the problem of odors and swine diseases.
