Abstract: This study examined the ventilation conditions at early stage of composting influence decomposition of organic matter for compost. An experimental device for composting was used and the ventilation conditions were adopted both continuous ventilation and on/off switching ventilation. The continuous ventilation that ventilated with a constant quantity during the experiment and the switching ventilation that reduce quantity of ventilation in the middle of the experiment were performed under conditions of plural with different quantity of ventilation. Comparison between the continuous ventilation and the switching ventilation, although integrated oxygen consumption was low level during composting, an organic matter decomposition rate was high by use switching ventilation conditions. The results suggested that the decomposition of organic matter rate progressed while reducing energy was permitted by reducing quantity of ventilation having passed the second peak of early stage of composting.
