| Abstract: | Reorganization of agricultural production through large capital investments by agricultural cooperatives is a feature of agriculture in Tokachi, Hokkaido. The purpose of this paper is to determine the economic ripple effect of investments in tangible fixed assets based on the regional input-output-table. One analysis of the economic structure in Tokachi was used to understand the economic relationships among industries. Another analysis of the cost-effectiveness was used to verify the validity of the effect of the capital investment. The analysis confirmed that the agricultural sector, the main industry in the region has a strong influence on the non-agricultural sectors of the economy in Tokachi. Further, the analysis also showed that the profits generated by the operations after investments in the facility exceed the costs of operation and maintenance with the prices commanded by agricultural products at present. Developments in agricultural prices are unpredictable because of the increasing globalization making agricultural cooperatives hesitate to make investments. However in the present circumstances agricultural cooperatives need to meet user demands through investments in new facilities to be able to increase market share. In conclusion, there is a need to develop arrangements for investments that accommodate both the present and potential future conditions. |
