Abstract: | Previously, electrocautery scalpel was rarely employed for scalp and skin incision in neurosurgery because of high risk for significant tissue damage. In this report, we describe preliminary surgical experience of scalp and skin incision by the use of microneedle electrocautery scalpel during cerebrovascular surgery. The Colorado micro dissection needle (Colorado Biomedical, Inc.), a microneedle electrocautery scalpel, was very useful to incise the scalp and skin with minimal bleeding in patients with non-ruptured cerebral aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, moyamoya disease, and internal carotid artery stenosis. Scalp clips for hemostasis was unnecessary through surgery. There was no problem in wound healing. Based on our preliminary experience, microneedle electrocautery scalpel would also be valuable for neurosurgery. |
