Rights: The current study sought to extract educational criteria from eye-tracking data of expert nurses and nursing students. A binocular camera (Pupil, Pupil Labs) was used to measure participants' eye movements. Completion time, gaze fixation frequency, and gaze fixation duration were measured and compared between the nurse group and the student group. After performance of endotracheal suctioning, participants were asked to complete the Japanese version of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) survey. Independent t-tests revealed significant differences between the two groups in completion time, gaze fixation frequency, and gaze fixation duration. The results revealed no significant differences in the frequency distribution of fixation point movement velocity or NASA-TLX scores. The workload might have been equally high in the unfamiliar laboratory environment. Completion time, gaze fixation frequency, and gaze fixation duration may provide convenient visual quantitative criteria for skill assessment regarding endotracheal suctioning.
