Abstract: The number of new farmers in Hokkaido is stagnant, and the region needs to be aware of and embrace the presence of single farmers and women famers in order to increase it. The task of this paper is to focus on the“single female farmer”as a typical new farmer and to clarify her character. As a result of an analysis of the actual situation, the following three points became clear. First, single female farmers aspire to farming as an occupational option. Second, they are able to establish their business on a small scale. Third, they have been able to achieve this owing to a flexible response by the local community.
