Abstract: This paper attempts to apply the notion of translation strategy discussed in the field of translation studies to a Japanese context. While translation studies mainly deals with two strategies, foreignization and domestication, there has been no such approach discussing translation in Japan despite there having been similar attitudes of translation toward original texts. In this paper, these strategies are explored, both in Western and Japanese contexts, followed by analyses of two of Oscar Wilde's works, The Importance of Being Earnest and Salome, as examples of those strategies. Recent Western viewpoints tend to prefer the foreignization, with the dominant attitude in Japan also regarding what can be called foreignization as a good translation. However, the normative foreignization strategy does not always function sufficiently in Japan. This paper argues that translation should decentre the institutionalised and dominant norm of receiving foreign literature in order to raise the possibility that the text can be opened indefinitely.
