Abstract: | This paper discusses the role of local communities in economic development from the perspective of a comparative study of two states; Uzbekistan and Japan. First, I describe the basic concepts of local communities in the two countries -mahalla and mura- while noting the similarities between them. Then, I glean some suggestions from Japanese historical experience toward economic development in Uzbekistan. |
