Abstract: | "Classes Conducted in English (CCE)" may sound very attractive to some ears. At present , there is a debate at Hokkaido University concerning how to increase the number of CCE. In this paper, I discuss three problems of the current debate on the CCE issue. The first is that no one seems to have been considering the "linguistic (human) rights" of both students and instructors, which is a very serious aspect of what language to use in education. The second problem is that CCE has two potentially conflicting purposes: increased English language proficiency for Japanese students and CCE for international students. The last problem is that CCE, if not properly carried out, may have serious negative effects on the cntire cducation system at Hokkaido University. |
