Description: | Brilliant in the style and original in the thought, Herzen's 《From the Other Shore》 has been regarded as one of his best works. At the same time, this work is the most complicated in its structure and very contradictory in its contents. The whole book can be divided into two parts : the part of dialogues and that of articles. In the first part, the conversation is held between the realists and the romantists. Although Herzen has mentioned in his autobiography, we can not consider the romantic "young man" in the chapters 《Before the Storm》 and 《After the Storm》 as I.P.Galakhov, Herzen's friend, and the realistic "middle-aged man" as Herzen himself. In the chapter of 《Consolatio》, neither "the doctor" nor "the young lady" experesses directly Herzen's own opinion. The two types reflect Herzen's own thoughts and doubts, and he wished to give them an expression in the style of the dialogue. The conversation, therefore, is nothing but his inner dialogue. In order to understand the organic structure of the whole book, and to know the development of Herzen's throughs, we must analyze in detail the contents of all chapters and the interrelation of them. |
