Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to investigate whether believers participate in volunteering in contemporary Japan. Recently, many researchers have studied the relationship between religion and volunteering in Japan. However, most of them have used qualitative case studies. The data sets of the 2002 and 2005 Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) were used in the present study. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to examine “regular volunteering” and “irregular volunteering” . The findings are as follows. Firstly, religious variables have, on the whole, positive significant effects on both regular and irregular volunteering, even though socio-demographic variables were controlled. Secondly, while both devotion and belonging to a religious organization had positive significant effects on “regular volunteering” , only devotion had a positive significant effect on “irregular volunteering” . Thirdly, Christianity and other religions had no significant effects on “irregular volunteering” . |
