Abstract: | Complex sentences have traditionally been classified into coordination and subordination, the latter being further divided into relative clauses, complement clauses, and adverbial clauses. This paper reconsiders the traditional classification of complex sentence types and argues that the cognitive grammar concepts of (i) A/D asymmetry, (ii) "conceptual overlap" (i.e. correspondences) resulting therefrom, and (iii) profiling are pivotal to a proper understanding of the semantic structures and"conceptual overlap" (i.e. functional overlap) of complex sentence constructions. |
