The Purpose of this study was to clarify the durability of 5 wood species which were nise-akashia (Robinia pseudoacacia), negundo-kaede (Acer negundo), sinju (Ailanthus altissima), harunire (Ulmus davidiana var.japonica), and todomatsu (Abies sachalinensis), in Hokkaido by using in-ground stakes. Todomatsu specimens prepared from lumber dried using either ambient-temperature drying or high-temperature kiln drying. This test was conducted in Hiyama experimental forest from July 2008 to October 2011. The grade of stake specimens were visually checked and its dynamic Young's modulus was measured by the longitudinal vibration method. Those tests were carried out annually from 2008-2011 for observation of deterioration with age. The decay by white-rot fungi were observed in all wood species, however the degree of decay degradation was dependent on wood species. Negundo-kaede and Sinju showed sudden decay degradation by rotting fungi, and had low durability of wood species in this study. Harunire had stake specimens with both sound condition and significant decay degradation, and showed characteristic decay pattern. Nise-akashia did not show decay degradation, and had decay resistance in open field. Regard less of drying condition, todomatsu showed slow degradation than negundo-kaede and sinju. This study indicated that wood may be rapidly degraded by white-rot fungi and its degradation depend on wood species.
