| Abstract: | This study examines whether religion foster participation in social activities in contemporary Japan and the reasons for this relation. Many sociological studies of religion in the West have shown that religious people have a tendency to participate in social activities. Despite the importance of this theme, such relationships have not been empirically researched in Japan. Moreover, because many of those Western studies have focused on Western societies and Christianity, we cannot tell whether such relationships extend to other populations, such as non-Christian or Asian societies. This study aims to fill these two voids by analyzing JGSS Cumulative Data 2000-2002. The findings are as follows. Firstly, those people who are religious also participate more often in social activities. This relation applies not only to Christians and members of New Religious Movements but also to traditional Buddhists. Secondly, not religious consciousness but commitment to Buddhist temples correlated positively and significantly with participation in social activities among Buddhists. | | 本稿は、現代日本において、宗教は社会活動への参加を促すものなのか、促すとすればそれはなぜか、を明らかにする。 近年、欧米では宗教が社会活動への参加を促す要因であることが実証的に明らかにされてきた。「宗教と社会活動」というテーマは重要であるにもかかわらず、日本では宗教を視野に入れた社会活動の実証研究は行なわれてこなかった。また、欧米の先行研究の多くは欧米社会・キリスト教を対象としており、非キリスト教社会・アジア社会におけるこのテーマの妥当性は十分に吟味されていない。本稿では、JGSS-2000～2002の累積データを通じて、これらの空白部分を埋めることを目指す。 知見は以下の通りである。1）宗教属性をもつ人は社会活動にも参加する。しかも、これはクリスチャンや新宗教信者のみならず仏教の檀家にもあてはまる。2）仏教においては、宗教意識ではなく寺院へのコミットの度合いが正の関連を示した。 |
