Abstract: Gravitationalsettlingoffineparticlesinaliquid-fillednarrowchannelhasbeenstudiedexperimentally and theoretically.Previousstudieshaveshownthattheparticulatesuspensionwithconcentration interfacetowardgravitationaldirectionbehavesasacontinuousfluidforhighconcentrationandsmall particle size,andthegravity-inducedinstabilityattheinterfaceenhancesthesettlingmotionof particles.Thepurposeofthisstudyistoinvestigatehowsuchaconcentrationinterfacebehavesand how particlessettlebygravityinvariousfinite-sizedchannels.Theexperimentalandtheoreticalresults indicatethattheaspectratioofthechannelcross-sectionisanimportantparameterfordescribingthe settlingbehaviorofparticulatesuspension.Moreover,wepredictthevelocityofthecollectivesettling of particlesinchannelswitharbitrarycross-section.
