Abstract: Micro-, submicron-,andnano-scaletitaniumdioxideparticleswerereducedbyreductionwithametallic calcium reductantincalciumchloridemoltensaltat1173K,andthereductionmechanismoftheoxides by thecalciumreductantwasexplored.Theseoxideparticles, metalliccalciumasareducingagent, and calcium chlorideasamoltensaltwereplacedinatitaniumcrucibleandheatedunderanargon atmosphere. Titaniumdioxidewasreducedtometallictitaniumthroughacalciumtitanateandlower titanium oxide,andthematerialsweresinteredtogethertoformamicro-poroustitaniumstructurein molten saltathightemperature.Thereductionrateoftitaniumdioxidewasobservedtoincreasewith decreasing particlesize;accordingly, theresidualoxygencontentinthereducedtitaniumdecreases. The obtained micro-poroustitaniumappeareddarkgrayincolorbecauseofitslowsurfacereflection. Micro- porous metallictitaniumwithalowoxygencontent(0.42wt%)andalargesurfacearea(1.794m2 g 1) can besuccessfullyobtainedbyreductionunderoptimalconditions.
