Abstract: We developed a new course in the freshman seminar for the purpose of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and taught it from 2009 to 2013. In this course the students researched and presented topics about global warming, harmonious coexistence, the problem of waste water and sewerage, environmental restoration, nuclear power plants and professional ethics. They also visited various places in Sapporo for their study about the environment. On the last day they made a newspaper about their activity in the course. After the course we presented them with two questionnaires. One was for the ordinary class evaluation. The other was a special questionnaire prepared by us. The results of two questionnaires showed that the average amount of time for they used for homework was increased to about three hours per week. Students were satisfied and wanted to study more about sustainable development.
