Abstract: This paper compares and contrasts the Japanese and Korean languages in video media. TV program makers sometimes make intentional and excessive pragmatic modification in the translation process. An example of the intentional modification is related to “role language” (Yakuwarigo). Even when it has not been used in the original Korean version, some role language is added in the Japanese version to create a unique personality. It is because the intention of the project by program makers had priority over the strategy by translators, and it can be called “intentional modification,” which differs from “obligatory modification” indispensable for translation. As a result, personality of the characters in the translated video media may differ from the original version.
