Abstract: | Using narrative structure analysis and narrative content analysis, this article will describe how the image of the Japanese emperor was constructed in Shenbao, and the influence of Japanese media, before and after the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1896). There were three periods regarding how the Japanese emperor was referred to in Shenbao. In the first period the image of the Japanese emperor in objective and subjective narrative was as a modern and military emperor who was respected by the people. However, in the second period the Japanese emperor was mostly depicted as a tyrant and the cause of war in subjective narrative. Finally, in the third period the image of the Japanese emperor in both objective and subjective narrative was as a modern, military emperor who was widely popular and the reason for successful modernization in Japan. |
