Abstract: Yb:GdVO_4 single crystals were grown by the floating zone method and their optical properties were investigated. The grown crystals contained no macroscopic defects such as inclusions and low-angle grain boundaries and had uniform distribution of Yb-concentration. The absorption spectra exhibited strong dependence on polarization of incident beams and the absorption coefficient was about six times as large as that of Yb:YAG with the same Yb-concentration.
