Stable isotope measurements are very useful in obtaining a greater insight into the cycling of carbon in forest ecosystems, especially in the attribution of the net carbon flux into various gross fluxes. In this article, a brief description of stable isotope measurements using a mass spectrometer is given, along with processes that give rise to variations in the stable isotopic ratios of carbon dioxide (CO2) in a forest ecosystem. Also included in the discussion are various studies highlighting the separation of nocturnal ecosystem respiration into soil and leaf respirations using oxygen isotopes, as well as separating out various gross carbon fluxes based on continuous stable isotope measurements of CO2 using a recent laser spectroscopy.
