Abstract: Due to China’s film system and film market environment, independent films, documentary films, art films and many other non-mainstream films could not be shown at cinema in China for a long time. Compared with mainstream films which can get billions of box office receipts, most non-mainstream films can not even be seen in movie theaters in China. Moreover, Chinese film industry pays more attention to the entertainment and market revenue that types of movies releasing are relatively similar. However, this situation started to be improved to some extent since 2016, the time when a new form of film screening called “ELEMEET” appeared. ELEMEET is providing channels for independent films, documentary films, art films and many other non-mainstream films which are difficult to become commercially in the past. This paper focuses on the user characteristics of ELEMEET, and through this analysis, we can get meaningful suggestions for the development of such films in the future.
