Abstract: | Within the framework of generative grammar, this paper attempts to argue that the additive particle mo ‘also’ in Japanese is a head that takes a maximal projection as its complement but is not available as a label. The previous analyses of mo as an adjunct to a head (cf. Kishimoto 2001, Hiraiwa 2005) cannot explain the fact that subject indeterminate pronouns in Spec-v*P position can be licensed by mo. This fact can only be explained by the proposed analysis in which mo takes a maximal projection as its domain. We will also argue that mo is a head based on the head-complement order in Japanese and propose that it cannot provide a label just like a conjunction in Chomsky’s (2013) analysis. Finally, we will show that as a consequence of the proposed analysis the Raisingto- Object construction in Japanese can receive a simple account in terms of standard CP structure, instead of Hiraiwa’s (2005) layered CP structure. |
