This paper compares the marriage motivations of Chinese women marrying in urban and rural Japan through different stages and analyzes the reasons for the differences in each stage. For the women who got married before 1999, they were faced with a big urban-rural income gap in China as well as a lack of free movement from rural to urban areas. Therefore, they chose to marry in rural Japan through intermediary agent so as to get rid of poverty. For the women who married in urban Japan during the same period, they were relatively well-off, and had the experience of visiting Japan, which facilitated their meeting, falling in love and getting married with Japanese men. For the group of women who married in rural Japan between 2000 and 2009, they were usually born in rural China. Although they moved to the cities as migrant workers, they could not become urban residents due to their census registrations. As a result, the chance to marry Chinese urban men was slim. At the same time, as the number of young women who went out to work increased, it also had an impact on local urban women, which was especially true in the Zhu Jiang River delta region. Such issues as urban-rural gap and gender factors pushed these women to choose international marriage. Over the same period, women who got married in urban Japan also faced dilemma. At that time, China was in the transition from building a basic to a comprehensive well-off society, and some people were not in the coverage of the benefit of the reform, so their life was relatively poor. Among them, many had experienced divorce, and it was difficult for them to marry again. From people around, they got to know the gap between Japan and China, thus decided to marry in Japan. Such economic gap between China and Japan and the difficulty in remarrying were essential boosters for international marriage at that time.
