| Abstract: | This paper concerns ‘A glossary of Horisha-Atayal’ a manuscript written by a Japanese officer Arao Eima in 1898, which is after three years of Japanese colonization. The language Horisha-Atayal coincides with the Paran dialect of Seediq. In the preface of his glossary, Arao explained that the language data was provided by a Sinicized Formosan man stationed in Puli governmental office as an interpreter of Seediq. This preface suggested that the informant’s mother was of Seediq origin, and his father was Pazih origin. This glossary is one of the earliest document of Paran Seediq. It also contains more than 500 vocabularies which was considerably larger than the other glossaries at the same age. The aim of this paper is to present Arao’s glossary with annotation by modern Paran Seediq and to compare the Paran Seediq in two different times from grammatical viewpoints (phonology, morphology, lexicon, and syntax). In his writing, Arao used some diacritical marks on vowels. It turned out that he used these marks to indicate the position of the stress and the difference of the vowel quality. As the analysis of the glossary showed, the informant’s Seediq was mostly accurate on the word-level but it was less accurate on the phrase-/clause-level. It also became clear that the glossary mistakenly contained some words from Truku Seediq, Atayal, Pazih and Southern-Hokkien. Arao’s glossary was wrongly cited by Naoyoshi Ogawa in his A Comparative Vocabulary of Formosan Languages. This vocabulary book contains Seediq data provided by ‘Arai’. This paper identifies the data ‘Arai’ with Arao’s glossary by extracting and listing their overlapping items. The comparison of the two datasets made it clear that Ogawa added some modifications to Arao’s writing probably based on his own knowledge of Seediq. One of the modifications was to delete Arao’s diacritical marks on the vowels, which was counterproductive since some vowels became indistinguishable. |
