With Chinese women, who take account of the largest number of international marriage with Japanese men, as the object of the study, this paper focuses on interpersonal relationship, which plays an important role in cross-cultural adaptation. According to different stages of the development of international marriage, this paper analyzes the interpersonal relationship of those women who married in urban Japan in terms of their relationship with colleagues, neighbors and community, Japanese-learning classmates, parents of their kid’s classmates as well as other Chinese in China and Japan. A further comparison is conducted with the previous study on women married in rural Japan. The two studies show some features in common in the following three aspects: During the initial stage (from early 1980s to 1999) and developing stage (from 2000-2009), (1) they made friends with Chinese who came to Japan and got married in the same period of the time; (2) set up social networks through children; (3) during the developing stage, Japanese-learning classroom was a gathering place for Chinese, where women made friends. The differences between women in urban and rural Japan lie in: (1) the interpersonal relationship of urban women with fellow Chinese show more diversification during the recession stage (from 2010 to now); (2) in terms of the relationship with neighbors and community, rural women are better than urban counterparts in all the three stages.
