| Abstract: | On retirement, the author reviewed the history of the Research Division for Higher Education and higher education research over the past 15 years and proposed a vision for the future. Over the past 15 years, the author has been able to participate in the creation and development of the Faculty Development Center and the Institutional Research (IR) Office in Hokkaido University. The author was also involved in the establishment and development of the IR Consortium of Japanese Universities. In higher education research, the author was involved in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which led to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of science education research, but it did not develop much due to the small government budget. On the other hand, STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) education continues to develop not only in theEuropean and American countries, but also in Asian countries, including Japan, with governments allocating appropriate budgets. Finally, I think that for the development of higher education in Japan, it is important to establish closer cooperation between industry and academia, and to develop a system of employment and human resource development for professional staff in the university. |
