Abstract: To provide an insight into Japanese culture and society through Japanese films, I give a class "Japanese Culture and Society as Viewed Through Japanese Cinema" for foreign students. In this class, students view a variety of Japanese films and then examine various aspects and images of Japanese culture and society as presented in these movies. On the occasion of the sabbatical, the last version of this program was completed, using movies based on the weekly themes listed below. Course Description. Week 1. General Introduction (On your mark). Week 2. Nature (Village of Dreams, Suzaku). Week 3. The Japanese Family 1 (Tokyo Story). Week 4. The Japanese Family 2 (Times of Joy and Sorrow, The Little Sister, The Family Game, Nobody Knows). Week 5. Bright Lights, Big City (Prepare for the Fair, The Boy called Third Base). Week 6. Couples (Maboroshi). Week 7. Young People (Linda Linda Linda, Seishun Den Deke Deke Deke (The Rocking Horseman), Kamikaze Girls). Week 8. Foreigners in Japan (All under the Moon, Sleepless Town, Kamikaze Taxi, Go). Week 9. War and Colonization 1 (Twenty-four Eyes, Westward Desperado, A Human Bullet, Red Sorghum). Week 10. War and Colonization 2 (Forward, Army of God, Black Rain, Hong Kong 1941, Devils on the Doorstep). Week 11. Japan after World War II (A Record of Wandering of a Mah-jongg Player, Green Mountains, Carmen Comes home, Floating Clouds). Week 12. Literature and Folklore (Rashomon). Week 13. Gangster and Yakuza Movies (World of Seijun Suzuki: Tattooed Life, Branded to Kill, Youth of the Beast, Fighting Elegy, Tokyo Drifter). Week 14. Samurai Movies (Duel at Ichijoji Temple, Yojimbo, Sanjuro). Week 15. Fantasy and Science Fiction (Godzilla). Supplementary week. Animated Films (Legend of White Snake (White Lovers), Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostoro, Ghost in the Shell).
