Abstract: Is it possible to apply the knowledge that has already been learned to improve understanding in future study? This paper attempts to answer the above question with reference to the verbs "iku" and "kuru," and "ageru" and "kureru." This paper suggests that understanding the speaker's perspective with regard to the usage of the verbs "iku" and "kuru" can be helpful in understanding the transfer of ownership of an object (or rights related to an object) with regard to the usage of the verbs "ageru" and "kureru." In addition, it points out that model sentences and exercises in a textbook of Japanese language may obstruct learning of Japanese grammar and cause errors in usage by learners.
