| Abstract: | 17世紀のセビリアに生まれ，のちにマドリードの宮廷で活躍したディエゴ・ベラスケスと，その師匠フランシスコ・パチェーコは，1620年前後に各々無原罪の御宿りという同じ主題の作品を描いた。多くの先行研究では，パチェーコが著した『絵画芸術（Arte de la Pintura）』に記された図像学上の規定とベラスケスの絵画とが比べられ，両者の描いた作品自体を比較し，その絵画表現上の相違を明らかにしようとした研究はみられない。本稿は，ベラスケスとパチェーコ，それぞれが描いた無原罪の御宿りの様式上の相違を指摘し，これらの作品の特質をとらえることを目的とする。着目すべきは，パチェーコが無原罪の御宿りに，宗教都市，商業都市として栄華を誇ってきたセビリアの象徴である建築物「ヒラルダの塔」と「黄金の塔」を描き入れている一方で，ベラスケスは特定の都市を示唆するようなモティーフは一切描いていない，という点である。パチェーコがおこなった，実在の街であるセビリアの姿を無原罪の御宿りに描きいれるという創意工夫は，上述の彼の著書『絵画芸術』で示されたある芸術上の信念にもとづいたものであったということが，明らかになった。すなわち，宗教絵画は鑑賞者に聖なるものの存在を説得力をもって示すために，「（描かれたものが）生きていると見えるかのようである（paresca viva）」ことを目指すべきであるという考えである。この信念のもと，パチェーコはあたかも聖母マリアがセビリアの上空に顕現しているかのような表現方法をとったのに対し，他方ベラスケスは，実在の街をモティーフとして挿入することなしに，聖母マリアの人体表現自体の写実性を追求することによって，作品の宗教画としての説得性を高めることを目指していた。 |
