Rights: Mechanical performance of shrink-fit joint for round mortise and tenon was evaluated. This joint is often used in making furniture from green wood. In this study, the evaluation was made with comparison to glued-fit joint. The effects of humidity cycle of the performance were also considered. The experiments were withdrawal test using T-type specimens, and bending-fracture tests using L-type specimens. Tested species were oak (Quercus crispula), elm (Ulmus davidiana var. japonica) and SPF lumber (mixture of spruce, pine and fir). It was found that withdrawal strength of shrink-fit joint was comparable with that of glued-fit joint, if the conditions of the partial bearing strength, the amounts of swelling and shrinkage, and the fit after the curing period were adequate. However, withdrawal strength of shrink-fit joint considerably decreased after a cycle of humidity change. On the other hand, bending strength and joint stiffness of shrink-fit joint were comparable with those of glued-fit joint. Furthermore, a cycle of humidity change did not affect the bending strength and joint stiffness.
