Sometimes my elementary level Japanese students ask me the difference between the following two sentences. 1) a. Watashi-wa Tokyo-ni ikimashita. b. Watashi-wa Tokyo-e ikimashita. The textbook used in our elementary Japanese course explains nothing about the difference. Thus we instructors usually answer that there is no difference here between the directional particles NI and E. In this research note I try to describe the semantic implication of the particle NI in contrast to other particles:E, DE, and WO. Ohno (2002) argues that E expresses direction and NI a goal. The word “goal” suggests a place where the subject or object of the action remains after the action is completed. Teramura et al. (1987) discuss the difference between NI and DE and conclude that DE expresses the place of action and the NI the place of existence. Finally, from the contrastive analysis of NI sentences and WO sentences, it is clear that in this last case the particle NI expresses the existence of the subject or object of an action. By analyzing the three contrasts NI-E, NI-DE and NI-WO this research note suggests that the particle NI always contains the meaning of existence or appearance.
