Abstract: 南大洋ではいたるところで海水特性の長期的な変化が生じている.ここ数十年間にわたる観測の蓄積から,南極底層水についてはその密度と体積の減少が明瞭になってきた.相対的に,ウェッデル-エンダービー海盆では暖水化傾向が強く,アムンゼン-ベリングスハウゼン海盆とオーストラリア-南極海盆では淡水化傾向が強い.沿岸大陸棚上では,ロス海やウェッデル海南西部の陸棚水に淡水化傾向が観測されている.沿岸高密度水の淡水化と底層水特性変化との関連性,暖水化・淡水化の定量的評価とメカニズムの理解が求められており,沿岸氷海域での持続的な観測の確立が望まれる.
Long-term changes in sea water properties are ubiquitous in the Southern Ocean. From in situ hydrographic observations for the recent decades, decreases in density and volume in Antarctic Bottom Water are detected. Freshening of shelf waters are observed in some sectors. Hence it is of high priority to understand the oceanic property changes quantitatively to uncover their relationship and mechanism, with an effort in establishing the sustained observation network on the continental shelf region.
