Abstract: 南極氷床は地球最大の淡水リザーバであり,南大洋は最大の熱リザーバかつCO2 リザーバである.これらの巨大リザーバは,相互作用しながら一体となって全球環境を変化させる.南極環境システムの変動メカニズムを理解するためには,現在の直接観測に加え,過去の変動を紐解く必要がある.南極氷床を掘削して得られるアイスコアはそのためのツールとして不可欠である.ここでは,新学術領域研究「南極の海と氷床」の全体像と,アイスコアによる長期の気候変動研究について紹介する.
The Antarctic ice sheet is the largest reservoir of freshwater, and the Southern Ocean is the largest reservoir of heat and CO2. These gigantic reservoirs interact each other and change the global environment. In order to understand the mechanism of variations of the Antarctic environmental system, it is necessary to unravel its past fluctuations in addition to direct observations. Ice cores obtained from the Antarctic ice sheet is indispensable as a tool for the purpose. Here we will introduce the new research project “Antarctic Ocean and Ice Sheet”, and studies on long-term climate variations through the analyses of ice cores.
