| Abstract: | 日本の近代化は，言語にも反映している。近代新漢語「発展」と「開発」はその一例である。「発展」と「開発」は現代日本語の中で，一般的に使用されている。しかし，近代初期に「発展」と「開発」はどのように使用されていたのか。「発展」はどのように基本語化したのか。「発展」と「開発」の使用初期にどのように使い分けられたのか。本稿は明治期の雑誌コーパスを通して，「発展」と「開発」の共起語句の調査により，以下の結果を得た。
（1）「発展」は近代新造語である。使用された初期には，他動詞用法であり，ほとんど自由民権運動に関わる文章に使われていた。1909 年と1917 年には，自動詞用法が増加し，主体となる語句はほとんど「公私」「事業」の分野に集中する。それは日本の殖産興業政策と関わっていると考えられる。
（2）「開発」は，明治初期に，自由民権運動に関わる文章に使われ，その後，自然資源の開発としてよく使われていた。「開発」は明治初期に，「発展」と区別せずに使用されていた。
（3）日本近代化とともに，「発展」は類義語「発生」「生長」「開発」「開展」「舒展」「進め（る）」「発顕」「顕露」「顕す」と競合い，「基本語」となった。「発展」と「開発」の比較により，「開発」は自然資源と共起であるのに対し，「発展」は各産業に関する言葉と共起する。 |
