| Abstract: | アメリカの南北戦争は，当時，イギリスの人々の関心事となっていた。しかし，英国作家チャールズ・ディケンズは，彼が監修する雑誌『一年中』の中でその話題を扱うことを抑制し，自身もその戦争について語ることを控えていた。本論では，この戦争と関連するテーマが，南北戦争期に発表された彼の作品の中に密かに刻まれている可能性に着眼したい。南北戦争中にイギリスの雑誌や新聞などでしばしば議論された話題に，アメリカの奴隷制への批判や，イギリスでの綿花不足の問題（アメリカ南部から綿花の輸入が途絶えることに関する危機感）がある。1860-1861 年に書かれた『大いなる遺産』には，どうもこれらの話題が潜んでいるようなのだ。本稿は，南北戦争がディケンズの作品執筆に与えた影響について述べていきたい。 |
