Abstract: 小型の冬眠哺乳類は冬眠時に体温が非常に低くなるが,それによってダメージを受けることがない.それは,少なくとも部分的には,冬眠哺乳類由来の培養細胞は低温下で長く生存するというような,冬眠哺乳類が生得的にもつ細胞レベルの低温耐性能力によって説明される.近年ヒト細胞株を用いた研究から低温における細胞死は過酸化脂質の蓄積によって引き起こされるフェロトーシスと呼ばれるタイプの細胞死に類似することが明らかになってきた.本稿では,冬眠哺乳類の細胞がどのようにして低温誘導性のフェロトーシスを回避しているか,最近のがん研究の成果も交えて考察するとともに,高次の臓器・全身レベルの低温耐性機構についても触れる.
The body temperatures of small mammalian hibernators drop to very low levels during hibernation, but the animals are not damaged by it. This can be explained, at least in part, by a cellular tolerance to low temperatures, such as the ability of cultured cells from hibernators to survive longer at low temperatures than those from nonhibernators. Recent studies using human cell lines have shown that cell death at low temperatures resembles a type of cell death called ferroptosis, which is caused by the accumulation of lipid peroxide. In this article, we discuss how mammalian hibernators avoid low-temperature-induced ferroptosis at cellular level, including recent results from cancer research, and also discuss the mechanisms of low-temperature tolerance at organ and systemic levels.
