Abstract: Science cafés have become popular as casual public dialogue format since 2005, when is considered the first year of science communication in Japan. We conducted a research focused on the participants in science cafés, using a method of marketing research, "segmentation." We used the third generation of segmentation method, which was originally from Victorian Government in Australia and was considered as useful to access target audiences and segmented the participants in science cafes and other science and technology (S&T) events such as public lectures, science festivals as "the high engagement in S&T" and "the low engagement in S&T" segments. As a result, we found that major participants in science cafés belonged to "the high engagement in S&T" segment and this tendency was true of public lectures and science festivals. However, we also found that the following three formats had a potential to attract "the lowly engagement in S&T" segment. 1) The theme is relevant to their lives. 2) The events are held in a place where can serve alcohols such as a bar. 3) The theme looks collaborative with non-science area such as art or Japanese culture. We need more samples and further analysis to better understand the participants in S&T events.
