Abstract: This article presents empirical research through sociological investigation into the bidding for and hosting of mega sports events in East Asia. Despite issues with the increasing burden on host cities due to the expanding scale of the Olympics, three consecutive Games are to be held in East Asia. Why would multiple cities in East Asia want to take on the burden of hosting the Olympics? There are many case studies of research into mega sports events in North America and Europe, but little research has been conducted to date regarding the event hosting process in Asia. In order to fill this gap, this article will illustrate how mega sports events such as the Olympics have been positioned in East Asia as opportunities for regional development. The example of the preparations for the PyeongChang Olympics will be analysed to elucidate the structural difficulties in regional development through hosting mega sports events.
